Needs Assessment & Intervention

A structured approach to identify and address barriers to recovery.

OVERVIEW

Preventing Delayed Recovery

The Delayed Recovery Prevention (DRP) model is driven by a structured approach to assess the unique needs of the injured worker and identify behavioral health factors that may be impacting recovery.

These factors are often not visible through standard medical evaluation but can significantly influence treatment progress, recovery timelines, and return to work.

Why It Matters

When these factors are not identified and addressed:

  • Recovery may stall or progress more slowly
  • Engagement in treatment may decline
  • Return-to-work timelines may be extended

Traditional approaches often focus on symptom reduction alone. However, improvement in symptoms does not always translate to improved work capacity.

This approach focuses on both, supporting recovery while improving readiness to return to work.

How It Used

in Delayed Recovery Prevention

Screening

Behavioral health screening is used to identify potential factors impacting recovery early in the claim.

Assessment

A structured assessment helps identify barriers, strengths, and areas requiring support.

Targeted Intervention

Focused, time-bound intervention is delivered to address identified factors and support functional progress.

What This Addresses

  • Barriers to recovery and treatment engagement
  • Work-related functional limitations
  • Stress, mood, and behavioral factors
  • Beliefs and expectations about recovery
  • Factors that may delay return to work

How This Supports Recovery

  • Earlier identification of issues impacting recovery
  • More targeted and efficient care delivery
  • Improved engagement in treatment
  • Better alignment between recovery progress and return-to-work goals

How It’s Delivered

  • Delivered virtually for consistent access
  • Provided by WC-trained behavioral health clinicians
  • Integrated within the broader DRP model and claim workflow
  • Structured and aligned with clinical need

When It’s Used

This approach is applied when:

  • Recovery is not progressing as expected
  • Behavioral health factors are suspected
  • Additional insight is needed to guide next steps
  • The goal is to support recovery progression and return to work
